What is an SR-22?

What is an SR-22? It's a piece of paper. It is the way the DMV can track whether or not you have auto insurance. It's a form issued by an insurance company to the DMV that is acceptable proof to the DMV that you are insured. If you don't pay your insurance bill, the insurance company will suspend your drivers license until you get a new SR-22.

How do I get an SR-22? By buying an insurance policy. Any insurance company will issue a SR-22 if you already have a policy with them. If do not have a policy in force, only "non-standard" insurance companies will issue a new policy with an SR filing. For the lowest rates, great service and best selection, call Avendia Direct Insurance services. 1-800-863-2383 for an office near you.

Where do I get an SR-22? The best place to buy an SR-22 is from an Insurance Broker. At Avenida Direct Insurance we have over 50 programs specializing in giving low rates to people that need SR-22s. We are not on the radio, TV or have big $10,000 /month yellow page ads and can therefore pass those savings on to you. We know that you need special treatment during the three years you are required to file an SR-22 and we provide excellent service to make sure you have no problems.

What is Financial Responsibility? This is another way of saying that you have insurance, in some states they call the SR-22 or SR-1P filing a "FR" filing.

How much does an SR-22 cost? The price of the SR-22 varies according to which insurance company you sign up with. Some companies charge as little as $15 to as much as $40 additional charge with a new policy. The cost of the SR-22 filing itself is not much, the cost of the insurance is what you are paying for.

How long do I need an SR-22? Usually an SR-22 needs to be on file with the DMV for 3 years and one month past your DUI violation date.

What is the difference between an SR-22 and an SR-1P? An SR-22 is what you need to file with the DMV when you get a DUI, DWI, Major Violation (eg.hit and run), or negligent operator. An SR-1P is the form that the DMV requires when you get into an accident and do not have an Insurance policy in force at the time of the accident. An SR-22 can take the place of an SR-1P, but if you are designated to have a SR-22, you cannot have a SR-1P instead.

Do I have to cancel my existing policy? No you do not. You can get an SR-22 from your present company, you just have to request it. They cannot turn you down or delay giving the filing to you, It's the law. The problem with demanding an SR-22 from your existing company is...they will cancel your policy at the first opportunity to do so. They will not renew you, if you miss a payment, they will not reinstate you.

Can I keep my low cost policy and just buy an SR-22? You can get what is called a non-owner policy from Avenida Direct Insurance services, We do not notify your present insurance company, we just get you a filing to make your Drivers license valid. In many instances your insurance company doesn't run your motor vehicle record every year or every renewal. We have had quite a few clients go all three years with a non-owner policy and keep their present low cost policy with their current carrier.

My insurance company cancelled me, now what? Getting an SR filing at Avenida Direct Insurance is affordable. In some cases people end up buying insurance for less than they are paying without a filing.
